Growth Disorders in Young German Shepherds

چکیده
Rapid Growth Problems The problems discussed here occur in the younger, rapidly growing German Shepherd. As German Shepherds are far more angulated than most breeds, they can appear to be having serious problems when in many cases they are going through fairly normal stages of development. Common problems are: 1. Excessive looseness of hocks, can be secondary to excessive depth of hindquarter angulation or increasing length of hock. 2. Down in pasterns (often seen with 1 above). 3. Flat feet (can be with both 1 and 2). 4. Roached backs – (often associated with 1 above). 5. Lameness – both perception of and real

Performance of Pugs, German Shepherds, and Greyhounds (Canis lupus familiaris) on an odor-discrimination task.
Public opinion and the scientific literature alike reflect a widespread assumption that there are differences in behavior between dog breeds. Direct empirical behavioral assessments of such differences, however, are rare and have produced mixed results. One area where breed differences are often assumed is olfaction, where German Shepherds, hounds, and Labradors are commonly used for odor-detec...

Alongside the humans serving in Vietnam, there were 3895 military working dogs, almost all of them purebred German shepherds. [2] (Among the 3895, there were 64 Labrador or golden retrievers used as trackers; the other 98.3 percent were German shepherds.) These dogs served as scouts, sentries, trackers, mine detectors, and tunnel explorers. About 91% of these dogs were "intact" (uncastrated) ma...

A variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) polymorphism in exon 3 of the human dopamine D4 receptor gene (DRD4) has been associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Rodents possess no analogous repeat sequence, whereas a similar tandem repeat polymorphism of the DRD4 gene was identified in dogs, horses and chimpanzees. Here, we present a genetic association study of the DRD...
متن کاملThe use of a behaviour test for selection of dogs for service and breeding. II. Heritability for tested parameters and effect of selection based on service dog characteristics
Heritability calculated for characteristics evaluated in behavioural tests can be used as a tool to select different kinds of service dogs. The evaluation was based on the test results of 13 10 German shepherds and 797 Labrador retrievers. The heritability for all evaluated characteristics of the two breeds was significantly different from zero with the exception of the characteristic prey driv...
